Air Flow measurement and air flow control technology has stayed stagnant, until a recent disruptive innovation of patented variable orifice plate technology. Alfa Omega Labs was commissioned to test and validate a truly new innovative patented technology, which progressed from conception to a product. A single size aperture device has similar performance characteristics as multiple calibrated orifices. Hence, the name Variable Orifice Plate Technology. A single size airflow metering device features a 100-1 turndown with air flow accuracies to within a few cubic feet per minute. The patented variable orifice plate technology is a disruptive innovation that creates a new simplified Building Technologies value chain.
The technology was so innovative it was costly to develop, test and productize. Innovation was required at every step of the testing during the productization process. Several PHD’s including a retired MIT professor of Aero-Acoustical Physics and Fluids led a dynamic team in the developmental process with one innovation leading to another innovation. During the thousands of tests conducted, the airflow stands were constantly enhanced to meet the stringent testing, timeline requirements and the advanced fluid dynamic protocols. Airflow verification tests required 2200 data points, including multiple repeatability tests, acoustical tests and were time consuming. The lab required continuous enhanced capabilities including proprietary software to operate complex algorithms, hardware, sensors, actuators, controllers and simulate environmental conditions accurately and quickly.
Alfa Omega labs has evolved into a state-of-the-art testing lab thru our experience with productizing a disruptive innovation. Alfa Omega labs is working with controls companies to update their peripherals and we are familiar with their hardware and software. Our knowledge enhancement has allowed us to expand our current testing capabilities by adding two additional state-of-the-art air flow stands and a pressurized sound chamber to streamline the testing including virtual testing and time stamped data logging.
Concurrently, 6 automated optical encoding stations were built for testing actuators, (2) additional air flow stands with supply and exhaust tracking capabilities, a pressurized sound chamber, sophisticated software with data collection modules and real time video data logging for both acoustics and fluid performance over a wide dynamic range. Supplementary equipment was purchased such as air quality meters, ozone meters, Ionization meters, acoustical measuring equipment including software, sensors, boilers, chillers, hydronics and electrical components.
